The Congress high command has finally rested the leadership issue on Thursday evening picking new faces to take on the party reins. In what came as a surprise, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo was named as the Congress Legislature Party leader ahead of strong contender and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat who until recently acted and was referred to as the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly. Also, Amit Patkar’s appointment as president of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee was a surprise. A change in leadership implies that the high command has weighed in on the failures at the 2022 elections and went in for fresh faces to usher in a change.
While the new leadership takes guard, both Lobo and Patkar have a daunting task ahead of party rebuilding, especially against the backdrop of leaders deserting the Congress and seeking comfort in other outfits like the Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress. The challenge will be to get back those who have left, especially when Congress is not in a position of power, or nowhere near it.
Secondly, the election result reflects the grim reality of Congress losing the hold over its minority vote bank, especially in Salcete, a vote that is so crucial to the fortunes of the party. The new leadership will have to work out ways to re-establish that trust with the minority voter during its rebuilding exercise. Congress has to swing into a damage control mode and salvage the situation which is turning catastrophic for the party from an election standpoint.
Thirdly, the pressing need of the hour is to ensure that the new leadership becomes the all-important glue that binds the Congress party and its warring factions together, make peace within, build a new level of confidence and self-esteem within partymen and stop the trend of legislators casually and consistently exiting the party. The party has been divided vertically, and the deadlock over the CLP leadership was a testimony to this. Lobo descending on Margao to seek the blessings of Kamat is a welcome goodwill gesture, and this vibe should trickle down the party ranks.
The high command, with this change, has not only given the party leadership a new direction but has sent down a clear message that it is alive to the situation and the sagging fortunes of the party. The challenges ahead are many, and it’s time the new team gets down to business and completely focuses on the priorities instead of constantly raising needless hopes of bouncing back to power. The party must embrace the fact that it is the principal Opposition and must inspire to be a force to reckon with.
The task ahead is monumental, but fortunately, the duo of Lobo and Patkar have time on their side. It remains to be seen whether they can change the party’s trajectory in the years ahead. The first real test would be the Lok Sabha election in 2024. Time will tell.
