A 45-year-old man’s leg was being operated upon at one
of Thane’s biggest super-specialty hospitals when the
surgeon in charge briefly halted the procedure to film
a cockroach moving around in the operating theatre. While
the doctors at the surgery ward were apparently not pleased
with the state of affairs inside where highest standards of hygiene
need to have been maintained, the question, however,
remains whether this was an opportune time to highlight an
issue which has been ignored over a long period of time.
The doctor briefly left the table and went about filming the
cockroach and later made a video which was sent to the dean
to highlight the conditions inside the OT. Even in cases of a
minor procedure, the surgeon is expected to be focused on the
job at hand, for the simple reason that the patient has reposed
his full trust in him and wants his attention all the time. In
this case, the patient was left with assistants, and even though
the doctor clarified that the patient’s care was never compromised,
the doctor’s filmy trail cannot be justified, no matter
how big an issue the doctor was trying to highlight.
Could this one video of a cockroach get the authorities into
thinking of hygiene, when they have neglected it all along?
