Financial crunch

The dust over the Assembly elections has settled down and the focus has now shifted to the March 11 results. Besides the common interest of who will emerge winners, the result assumes significance vis-à-vis the fate of a host of schemes and benefits extended to citizens by the BJP-led government. Moreover, the progress of the big projects that are still taking shape across the State hangs in the balance with the new government having an arduous task at hand of arranging funds to keep the projects going.
The new South Goa district hospital which is already hit by several delays, primarily because of finances, is now facing yet another big hurdle. The government is now required to arrange Rs 75 crore to get the project ready for commissioning. Another big project is the replacement of the damaged Margao sewerage project’s north main line “ connecting Arlem, Fatorda to the Sirvodem Sewage treatment plant. The repair of the entire north line is stuck due to lack of funds even as affected residents are pinning their hopes on the new government to make a budgetary provision of Rs 66 crore for the rehabilitation of the entire 12-km sewerage line from Arlem to the Sirvodem treatment plant. The new government will now have an uphill task to manage its finances and keep the key projects and several schemes afloat.
