The Health Minister is supposed to look after the health of the public in Goa. As seen in the picture, some unknown persons have set ablaze the garbage dumped near the Health Minister’s bungalow at Dona Paula. While the Minister may or may not be aware of what is going on in his neighbourhood, it must be pointed out that this is not the first time the fire has been set.
This time (on March 7), however, the flames went up so high that people at Sagar Society, NIO colony and NIO Institute and down the Bay View where I reside could smell the fumes at around 11 am for almost an hour.
Environmentalists are also keeping mum because no action is being taken against such elements in Goa. We have already witnessed several cases of cancer in Goa, whether due to cell towers erected around the whole of Dona Paula or due to the fumes or maybe both.
I request the Health Minister Viswajit Rane to take immediate remedial steps with the concerned department of Health or CCP to stop people dumping garbage all over Dona Paula and then setting it ablaze.
Stephen Dias, Dona Paula
