The Carnival celebrations begins on February 10 and the search is on for King Momo to lead the celebrations. The selection committee has invited entries from large-hearted, jolly, fun-loving Goans for King Momo. It is observed that criteria like being fat, obese overweight and over-sized are not included for the selection. But then it is seen that over the years the person selected as King Momo is usually a fat, over-sized obese guy. By such a selection are we not in a way propagating obesity? Obesity has become a global epidemic and is responsible for health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, which can lead to heart disease and stroke. It also leads to osteoarthritis and breathing problems like asthma besides several other health complications. For a change why can’t we have a King Momo who is slim and fit?
It is absolutely false that only fat and obese people are jovial, large-hearted and fun-loving. In comparison a slim and fit person could be more fun-loving. It is understood that the Carnival route in Panaji has been changed this year. The Carnival committee could also look into the possibility of choosing a King Momo who is tall, handsome, slim and fit. This will send a strong message across that one does not have to be obese to enjoy the good things in life. On the contrary obesity can shorten one’s life.
