It s never proper to snore through an official function, especially if you re on the dais. At the Independence Day parade, Deepak Dhavalikar and others were caught napping, literally. While this is clear indication as to the interest levels of politicians during the parade, it also puts the focus firmly on how interesting our government events are. In no way is this a problem about the level of patriotism displayed by our local politicians, but it does beg the question, if government officials cannot keep their eyes open during a state-sponsored event, then what hope is there for mere citizens? No one is asking for a carnival-styled parade or a DJ to make things interesting. But do events on Independence Day, Republic Day etc have to be this stoic and lacking in colour? One cannot use the excuse that they were up burning the midnight oil, hence the sleep deprivation? Granted, this is a solemn moment of sorts, to celebrate the countless sacrifices made to ensure that the country gained independence all those years ago. But there are ways to make this day interesting and relevant in today s age. I-Day is one of celebration and joy, not of something that turns into an actual snoozefest for ministers and other heads of State.
