Accompanied by former Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva, the taxi drivers called on the Colva police station in-charge, PI Philomena Costa with a plea to initiate action against the taxi driver allegedly driving the taxi beyond 7 pm.
The delegation explained to PI Costa that there are around 40 taxi drivers, working for the taxi owners, adding that while the 39 drivers leave home at 7 pm, only a lone driver, hailing from outside the State, remains at the taxi stand beyond the prescribed limit. As per the norm, the drivers cannot drive the taxis after 7 pm, and it is for the taxi owners to drive the vehicles after the prescribed hours.
The delegation has warned that the presence of the driver late night at the beach can result in law and order problem, as they sought the intervention of the men-in-uniform to action on their complaint.
Ex-MLA Caitu demanded that justice should be meted to the local taxi drivers from Colva, saying that the norms laid down by the taxi drivers ought to be complied by everyone.
"We fail to understand why only lone driver is driving the taxi while others leave home by 7 pm," he said, while demanding that the police should also investigate into the serious allegations of supply of drugs and sex workers at the Colva beach late
evenings.
PI Costa later told the media that he has heard the grievances listed out by the Colva taxi drivers, adding the police would investigate into the
issue.
