CANACONA
It was an unusual sight to find a group of people with face masks squatting on the floor of the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) building on Monday.
Members of the Jagruk Canconkars began a 3-day chain hunger strike seeking a permanent solution to garbage issue confronting Canacona taluka. The 3-days chain hunger strike initially began with eight participants at 9.30 am and continued till 5.30 pm.
The protestors sat in the corridor of the CMC building with face masks, seeking to convey the message that atmosphere even in the municipal council was not clean, with stench from the nearby municipal fish market.
Sandesh Telekar said the protestors would not withdraw their strike till they get an assurance from an official in writing regarding an immediate resolution to the garbage problem at the Garbage Treatment Plant in Dumane.
“Simply covering the garbage with tarpaulin is not a solution. A permanent treatment and disposal process of garbage, for which the GTP was set up at Dumane in the first place, should be promised within days and not months,” Telekar said.
Incidentally, CMC Chairperson Chaya Komarpant, Dy Chairperson Sham Dessai, CMC Chief Officer Raju Dessai and Councillor Hemant Naik Gaonkar went to meet the protestors and requested them to withdraw their hunger strike as they were initiating the process to resolve the issue. The protestors, however, refuse to relent and continued their protest.
