MARGAO: With waste and garbage from the neighbouring panchayat areas continuing unabated, Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai has asked the South District Collector, Anjali Sehrawat to convene a meeting with the panchayat bodies located on the city outskirts to resolve the burning garbage issue.
"We need a comprehensive solution to the waste problem. While the Municipality has initiated a number of steps to resolve the garbage imbroglio, we have observed that waste from the villages is finding its way into the city from across the Municipal limits," Babita said.
Incidentally, attempts made in the past by the MMC chairperson to convene a meeting with the sarpanchas of the 10 panchayat bodies bordering the Municipality had come a cropper with none of the sarpanchas, barring the Aquem-Baixo sarpanch Sharon Quadros, turning up for the meeting.
"It is high time that the district authorities bring the sarpanchas of the neighbouring panchayats for discussion to resolve the garbage issue in a holistic manner," she added.
The MMC chairperson said the civic body has placed order for a garbage compactor and a truck, adding that one more garbage compactor will be added to the fleet in the near future.
