An electricity transformer caught fire near the Vasco Sports Club at Kharewado in Vasco on Wednesday morning.
While some said the transformer caught fire early morning due to a short circuit, locals claimed that garbage stacked around the transformer had initially caught fire. A Vasco fire tender later extinguished the fire.
When contacted, social worker Aaqif Syed appealed to people to avoid dumping garbage around transformers.
Syed said the area near Vasco Sports Club in Kharewado was earlier used as a garbage segregating point and there were two more transformers in the area.
"We hope authorities will act to resolve the garbage issue in the area. The electricity department also should mark a fence around the transformer to deter people from throwing garbage near the transformer," said Syed.
