Jose Manuel Fernandes, former sarpanch and sitting panch of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim Panchayat, expired late Sunday night while undergoing treatment at GMC hospital.

When contacted, former sarpanch Martha Saldanha said Fernandes, who was about 74 years, was to leave for UK on a holiday.

“Just a few days ago, he had a small boil on his foot and in a few days, his foot was swollen. He had diabetes and by the time we insisted that he goes for a checkup, we realised that there was pus.”

“When he was taken to GMC, we were informed that the pus had spread in his body and that he was critical and required an operation. He was extremely close to me and I spoke to him from the GMC on Sunday night. However by around 11.45 pm, I was told that he had expired. We have lost a great human and I have lost a close friend who would always stand with me through thick and thin," said Saldanha.

Saldanha described late Fernandes as very active and a people’s man who took up public issues and worked in ward of Prialwado.
