CANACONA
With barely two months for the panchayat elections, Daya Gaonkar submitted his resignation as Cotigao sarpanch, a post he had held since the last panchayat election. According to sources, Gaonkar, who enjoyed confidence of all six other panch members in the 7-member Cotigao panchayat, resigned to hand over the charge to panch Nagesh Gaonkar as previously amicably agreed upon. Canacona BDO Anil Naik confirmed the resignation and said it had been submitted to his office three days ago. Naik further informed Gaonkar's resignation will come into effect after 10 days of submission, and only after that period will a new sarpanch be elected within a period of 60 days. The present term of all panchayats, including Cotigao, in the State ends by June 19 and panchayat general elections are likely to be held latest by mid-June this year.
