Goonj, an NGO working for the villagers across India, has appealed to the people to donate used school books, unused notebooks and story books. The books will be channelised through their school kits and also used to set up libraries. “Text books up to std 4, children’s story books and activity books for libraries, text books from class 5 to 12 (English language) for urban areas. There’s a huge gap in the syllabus of various Boards. However, if there’s any specific requirement from rural parts, the books are sent there too,” states Alka Damle, social activist from Vasco who has been associated with Goonj.
Higher education, competitive examination books are mainly channelized to the organisation who are supporting the students preparing for such examinations in both urban and rural regions. Novels, fiction and non-fiction books are also welcome, says Damle. There are book stalls at various places - colleges, schools, collection camps etc and anyone can take a book and donate or contribute the amount they wish to donate. If there are any specific requirements from the field for such books then we send it on field also, says Damle. Outdated or old syllabus books are sent to the scrap, because there is no use to send these books anywhere. Textbooks of any standard/class in regional language (Marathi in Maharashtra) are channelized through school kits, to set up libraries in rural parts by the Goonj team.
