MARGAO: Ten-man Vasco Sports Club overcame Geno FC 1-0 in the GFA Goa Professional League, at SAG Trinity ground, Benaulim, on Saturday.
The match kicked off with Vasco Club bringing along its share of excitement, where showcased a well-coordinated effort between its players and attacked the rival citadel. Their efforts bore fruit in the 25th minute when captain Momocha Singh floated the ball to defender Nitish Hazra who tapped it home.
Stung by the setback, Geno FC intensified their attacks and launched flurry of attacks by Vasco defenders who were stubborn at the back. Vasco Club were unlucky when Khaidem Meitei's rasping shot hit the cross bar and much to the dismay of Vasco supporters.
The second half saw Geno FC respond with a well co-ordinated counter attack with immense pressure in an attempt to equalise but the Port Towners adopted a defensive approach. In the 77th minute, Vasco Club suffered a jolt as captain Momocha Singh was given marching orders by the referee.
At the fag end, Geno FC went all out in search of equaliser but the Vasco defenders stood tall in protecting their slender lead.
