Archbishop ordains Carmelite Deacon

Carmelite Deacon Jason Francis Coutinho was ordained a priest by Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrão at a Eucharistic Celebration at the Carmelite Monastery in Margao.
Provincial Superior of the Karnataka-Goa Province of the Order of the Discalced Carmelite Fr George Santhumayor, Superior of the Divine Springs Retreat Centre (Xellim) Fr Alvito Fernandes, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Grace Church (Margao) Fr Joe Rodrigues, Deacon Babusha Rodrigues and 35 other priests concelebrated the Eucharistic celebration.
Explaining the role of a priest, Archbishop Ferrão said a Priest is the Minister of the Word of God, Minister of the Sacraments and a humble servant.
“As a Minister of the Word of God, a priest needs to listen to it, proclaim it and witness it in life,” he said while requesting the faithful to pray for the Priests and Religious.
Fr Silvestre D’Souza, Superior of the Carmelite Monastery Margao was the commentator while Fr Macson Dabre, Director of the Students at the Carmelite Seminary, Mapusa, along with the Carmelite Seminarians animated the Liturgy.
Fr Jason, the son of Dr Agnelo and Vera Coutinho from Varkhandem-Ponda, completed his SSCE at A J De Almeida High School Ponda, HSSC at Chowgule College, Margao and graduation at St Philomena’s College, Mysore.
He joined the Order of the Discalced Carmelite in 2011 at Avila Jyothi, Mapusa and did his Postulancy at the Carmelite Monastery, Margao. He was ordained Deacon by Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha of Mangalore on October 13, 2021, and as Deacon, he served the community of Asha-Deepa, Madanthyar.
