Residents in the peaceful area of Cuelim in Cansaulim were in for a shock when a local was found dead in the Borsulem lake on Tuesday afternoon.
Verna police later identified the deceased as Fransisco Piedade Aguiar (59) of Xendo-Cuelim.
Many locals rushed to the site on hearing news that a body had been spotted in the lake, even as Verna police along with a fire brigade began operations to retrieve the body from the lake.
Speaking to media, Cansaulim Panch Jose Maria Furtado said a few locals had noticed the body early Tuesday morning.
"Many people are always around this lake and usually carry out fishing activity. The lake is surrounded by farmlands and people carry out agricultural activity here. This is not a secluded spot and there is always a presence of people almost throughout the day. The body floating in the lake has shocked everyone," said Furtado.
Meanwhile Verma PSI Pravin Simepurushkar said the body was recovered and sent to the Sub District Hospital at Margao.
Verna police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 CrPC and PSI Pravin Simepurushkar is investigating the case under the supervision of PI Diago Gracias and guidance of DySP Salim Shaikh.
