SANGUEM
Sanguem Councillor Meshu D’Costa is upset with Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) authorities for disposing animal carcasses and other waste near the cemetery in his Ward 2 and the water tank, from where drinking water is supplied to people living in Sanguem municipality.
D’Costa has said the disposal of animal carcasses by burying them near the cemetery has become cause for concern to people visiting the cemetery and to those residing in the nearby areas.
“Quite often, there is foul odour from the carcasses buried in the ground. I have raised this issues with municipal authorities on several occasions, but to no avail,” complained D’Costa.
Since the Garbage Treatment Plant was commissioned at Curchorem-Cacora, the Sanguem municipality has found it difficult to find space to dispose off animal carcasses and also lacks space to segregate wet and dry waste.
For some time, SMC had been disposing off animal carcasses at its own land at Dudhal ward of Kalay village, but this was stopped after opposition from residents in the area.
Since animal carcasses are not being accepted for disposal at the Waste Treatment Plant at Cacora and with no other option, the SMC began burying the animal carcasses near the Cemetery in Ward 2, prompting objection from the ward councillor.
