Around 30 construction industry workers drawn from across the country were imparted skills in waterproofing, structural repair and maintenance of built structures at a three-day workshop held earlier this week in Goa under the aegis of the Institute for International Talent Development (IITD).
A private limited company, IITD held the 3-day training and certification course in its endeavour to develop skilled supervisors and entrepreneurs in the field of
waterproofing, structural repair and maintenance of structures.
A first of its kind in Goa, it covered modern techniques in waterproofing, concrete repairs, concrete protection, injection grouting and concrete technology.
Practicalities of using modern construction chemicals were also covered in the interactive program, which had both theory and practical components.
A press release issued by IITD said, the program was an opportunity for entrepreneurs to garner technical skills and launch startups for maintenance of civil engineering assets.
The course offered certification of competency accredited by Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC), the apex body in the construction industry set up in tandem with the then Planning Commission (now Niti Aayog), to raise quality levels by providing organizational infrastructure and guidance.
One of the main initiatives of CIDC is to train manpower from skilled worker level to the construction management level and the 3-day course conducted in Goa was a step in that direction.
Dr P R Swarup, Director General of CIDC, Robert D’Souza of Int-Electra, a highly technical expert in the field of Injection Grouting and Samir Surlaker, Director of IITD, shared their vast experience in their respective fields of expertise
The segments in the course were covered by field experts in concrete, waterproofing and repairs and maintenance of structures.
Surlaker conceptualized and conducted the course and covered the basics of concrete, waterproofing, repairs and detailing.
Surlaker and D’Souza covered case studies in injection grouting, Prasad Bhobe covered practical material application, Shounak Vaigankar covered practical injection grouting and Sujay Surlaker covered costing and estimation.
A joint CIDC-IITD certificate of competency was presented to the 30 participants based demonstrations and a written test. It allows the attendees to be placed in CIDC’s national database and aims to improve their employability, the IITD press release said.
