The All Goa Small Scale Responsible Fisheries Union has called for scrapping the proposed Marina project in the Zuari river at Nauxim citing several grounds, including that it would expel fishing communities.
In a statement the organisation said, the project emanating from a lease deal between MPT Kargwal Constructions Private Limited of 2010, is "ill-conceived".
"The lease agreement is based on decisions of MPT and has ignored fishing activities in the river permitted by the Fisheries department," it said.
It also said the ecological dangers to marine ecology due to the project are officially placed on record by Goa Bio-diversity Board in case of the Yacht Haven marina by Chowgules inside Zuari River at Sancoale, which is relevant to Nauxim Marina as well.
The organisation also said that Kargwal Constructions has recently approached the Bombay High Court at Goa to determine whether "Public Consultation" is required and whether the indefinite postponement of the EIA public is unjust to them.
The project, the organisation's president Roque Menezes said, has been stalled for nearly 10 years by a public struggle at Nauxim and it is now urgent that it be scrapped totally by cancelling the lease.
