The Socorro panchayat on Wednesday demolished an illegal scrapyard and also launched a drive to seal illegal shops in the village.
Most of the Socorro panchayat members were present during the demolition operation.
Speaking to media persons, Socorro Sarpanch Soniya Pednekar said the owner of the scrapyard was issued a notice to remove the scrapyard on December 28, 2022.
“Despite repeated reminders, the owner did not remove the scrapyard and the Panchayat was forced to demolish the scrapyard after completing legal formalities.
“A few months ago, a scrapyard in Socorro had caught fire and farmers had suffered losses. Also, goods which were stolen had been found in a scrapyard. Hence, the panchayat decided not to encourage any scrapyard in our village,” said Pednekar.
“If any resident notices a scrapyard operating in the village, they should immediately inform the panchayat and we will take action immediately against the owner of the scrapyard.”
Pednekar further informed that the panchayat had launched a drive to seal illegal shops in the village.
“The panchayat noticed many shops operating without permission from the panchayat, thereby depriving the panchayat of revenue in the form of taxes. Legal notices were also issued to these shops, but in vain. Hence, the panchayat was forced to seal their shops. They were asked to obtain permission from the panchayat before restarting their business.”
“The panchayat is not against any shopkeeper but they should do the business after completing necessary legal formalities. Tourism Minister and local MLA Rohan Khaunte has also advised the panchayat not to allow illegal activities in our area. The shopkeepers whose shops were sealed have now approached the panchayat and have applied for license to operate their shops,” Pednekar added.
