A temporary fabricated shed to relocate fish vendors was erected on Friday adjacent to the existing Panaji fish market.
The work had been tendered by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) to pave the way for the demolition of the 1980s-built market building and begin work on phase III of the new market.
On Friday after work on erecting the shed was complete, fish vendors and CCP staff were seen marking the new sitting arrangements and spaces for the vendors.
CCP sources said the new shed is expected to go into operation on October 1. However, some fish vendors said there is no provision for drainage made as yet which could pose a problem as the dripping wastewater will have no outlet.
Meanwhile, as reported earlier, the CCP's plan to demolish the old market building which it had evacuated citing its dangerous condition and threat of collapse is expected to get delayed as meat traders and a couple of other tenants have sued the Corporation before the Bombay High Court at Goa.
The Bench of the High Court hearing the matter has sought a demolition and reconstruction plan from the CCP and also asked it to find space to provide temporary stalls to rehabilitate them.
The phase III of the CCP market meant to house the fish and meat vendors by demolishing the existing old building was originally planned to take off in 2012-13 but got pushed to the back burner. The project, however, was resurrected in April last year and finally, plans were drawn to build phase III after demolishing the existing building built back in the 1980s.
