Maintenance of water supply equipment, including water pumps, pumping portable water to the residents of government Junta quarters came to the fore after taps ran dry since last night.
Water was restored around Thursday noon, but the tap again ran dry at 3 pm, before the system was put in place late evening, thanks to the personal supervision by PWD Assistant Engineer, Augusto Pereira and his team.
With tap running dry last night and most of the day, beleaguered occupants had to rush to the PWD pump house, Monte Hill to fetch water.
It was only at around 9.30 pm on Thursday that water was restored to the building in the Junta quarters complex.
The Assistant engineer informed that the pump broke down on Wednesday evening due to both electrical issues and problems with the pump. While the electricity officials were called to rectify the power defects, the pump had to be repaired. “The housing complex received water around noon after one of the pumps was repaired. The water, however, stopped flowing as the PWD team was on the job to repair the pumps”, sources said.
This is perhaps the first time in the last five months that water issues raised its ugly head at the government quarters.
The PWD has now placed orders for two new pumps to replace the old ones, which is expected to take care of the water requirements of the Junta quarters complex for the next two years.
Besides, the PWD has started the replacing the old water lines in the complex to plug frequent water leakages.
Margao Municipal Councillor Raju Naik representing Pajifond ward has appreciated the work put in by Assistant Engineer Pereira in restoring the water supply.
“I appreciated the Assistant engineer for personally monitoring the repair of the pumps and to put a system in place. We did not see any other engineer at the site when taps in the Junta quarters ran dry”, Raju said.
