The chaotic condition of service roads and lack of signages due to the ongoing NH66 expansion work claimed the life of a young driver and injured eight bus passengers in a road accident involving a passenger bus and tempo at Colvale on Tuesday evening.
The tempo driver, Vinod Yadav (32) of Uttar Pradesh who was seriously injured was rushed to the North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The eight passengers, mostly women, who had suffered minor injuries were discharged after treatment.
Mapusa Police informed that the accident happened at around 5.30 pm.
The bus with around 11 passengers was moving from Pernem to Mapusa while the tempo was coming from the opposite direction.
Although at several stretches the road has been converted into one-way due to the ongoing national highway expansion work, there were no proper signages installed leading to chaos amongst the motorists in the area.
According to the police in absence of signage, the tempo driver went on the wrong side of the road and hit the oncoming passenger bus on its side.
The tempo driver who was trapped inside the cabin was rescued by the locals and rushed to the North Goa District Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Mapusa Police are investigating further.
