Shifting of Vasco fish market put off till today

Vendors want proper facilities in temporary shed

VASCO

A day after agreeing to shift out of the old fish market premises on Wednesday , the Vasco Fish Vendors Society (VFVS) has written to the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to delay the shifting till Friday.

The VFVS has also requested the MMC to make necessary sitting arrangements, clear the drainage system and prune branches in and around the temporary shed provided to the Vasco market fish vendors.

In its letter to MMC and Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Thursday, the VFVS said the Vasco fish vendors had in principle agreed to shift to the temporary shed erected and hand over the old fish market to MMC for the construction of the new fish market.

"It was orally agreed that all safety and cleanliness measures will be taken up before shifting vendors to the new temporary shade but it has been noticed the fully grown trees in the area pose imminent danger of falling down and damaging erected shed and human life,” stated the letter.

“The temporary shed is not clean and the drainage system also needs to be cleaned so that rainwater and waste water do not accumulate and create health issues and problems for vendors and customers.”

There are also no sufficient seating arrangements to accommodate all fish, fruit and vegetable vendors who used to do the business in the old market. We request the MMC to urgently take up steps for safety of vendors and people in the temporary shed,” stated the letter.
