In recent times, concerns have escalated regarding the unruly behaviour exhibited by tourists visiting the state of Goa, prompting calls for immediate government intervention to address the issue.
The sentiment among locals, echoed by individuals from various segments of society, underscores a growing frustration with the unchecked rowdiness displayed by desi tourists, particularly those on budget tours.
John Lobo, a shack owner from Baga, expressed dismay over the prevailing attitude among tourists, emphasising the urgent need for stringent laws and their effective enforcement.
Lobo highlighted instances where tourists blatantly flout rules without fear of consequences, attributing the problem to a lack of accountability on the part of authorities.
Similarly, Anthony De Souza, a hotel owner in Calangute, lamented the rise in incidents, notably those involving drunken driving and disregard for traffic regulations.
De Souza criticised the apathetic approach of the police, citing instances where cases were settled rather than pursued, contributing to a culture of impunity among tourists.
A local, Pradeep Harmalkar from Anjuna, reiterated concerns about the laissez-faire attitude perpetuated by government advertising, which seemingly promotes the “anything goes” mentality among tourists.
Harmalkar criticised the inertia displayed by authorities in addressing the issue, highlighting a systemic failure to uphold standards of decent behaviour.
Echoing these sentiments, Ravi Harmalkar from Vagator pointed to a decline in the quality of tourists, particularly an increase in Indian tourists exhibiting disruptive behaviour.
He underscored the need for proactive measures from the government to attract and retain quality tourists while curbing the influx of rowdy visitors.
The consensus among stakeholders is clear: the current trajectory of unchecked rowdiness among tourists poses a significant challenge to Goa's reputation as a premier tourist destination. Urgent action is needed to implement and enforce stricter regulations, along with a concerted effort to promote responsible tourism.
In response to mounting concerns, authorities must prioritise the formulation and implementation of effective measures to address the root causes of rowdy behaviour among tourists. This includes enhanced policing, stricter penalties for offenders, and targeted campaigns to promote responsible tourism practices.
Failure to address these issues risks further tarnishing the image of Goa and undermining its appeal as a sought-after destination for travellers worldwide.
As such, concerted efforts from both the government and local stakeholders are imperative to restore order and uphold the standards of hospitality and civility for which Goa is renowned.
