Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar has clarified that the water level in Amthane Dam is deliberately being kept low to facilitate crucial repair work on its gate by the end of May.

He assured that there is no water crisis in the State, as all dams currently hold water levels 2 per cent higher than last year.

Addressing concerns about the declining water level in Amthane dam, Shirodkar explained that the reduction is intentional to enable repairs.

“The gate of Amthane dam needs to be repaired and that is why we have not replenished the water. Since the dam has only a single gate at present, repair work is not feasible without lowering the water level. We are planning to install a double-gate system,” he said.

He further elaborated that to construct the second gate, the water in the dam must be drained gradually.

“We cannot drain the water all at once, so we are reducing the level step by step. By the last fortnight of May, we will begin repairs and install a double gate, ensuring that there will be no issues for the next 20 to 30 years,” he stated.

Reassuring citizens, the minister confirmed that there is sufficient water in the State’s reservoirs to last until the monsoon.

“I reviewed the dam levels on Monday, and compared to last year, we have 2 per cent more water this year. There is no need for any panic,” Shirodkar affirmed.

With the repairs scheduled to be completed before the arrival of monsoon rains, the government aims to strengthen the dam’s infrastructure and ensure long-term water security for the region.
