CANACONA

A man from Chapoli in Canacona was injured when a coconut tree fell on his house on Wednesday afternoon as a result of heavy rains and strong winds on Wednesday.

According to the Canacona Fire Services, a coconut tree that fell on the house damaged the roof  and injured the occupant, who was moved to the Canacona Community Health Centre.

The Canacona fire brigade personnel had to rush to Karvem-Gaondongrim to clear a jackfruit tree which fell on the road blocking it.

In another incident at Gaondongrim, a branch fell on electricity alignments. The fire services cleared the fallen branch, while electricity officials later restored power supply in the area.

Elsewhere in Sadolxem, a coconut tree fell and damaged electricity alignments. The fire services and electricity staff worked together to clear the area and restore power supply. While fire services personnel were busy attending to other calls, they were informed that three dogs had accidentally fallen into a well at Shristhal.

Before a fire services team could reach the spot, a team from the animal rescue services reached the site and saved the three dogs.

Meanwhile, at least four vehicles skidded off the road on the Karmalghat section on Wednesday.

In yet another mishap along the Poinguinim-Loliem stretch of the highway, a Karnataka-registered lorry (KA-30-M-6664) rammed into the bridge at Maxem Bazaar.

Requesting the government to urgently address the growing number of road mishaps along the highway in Canacona taluka, Loliem-Polem Sarpanch Ajay Lolienkar has demanded a solution. Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes has also asked the government to either stop traffic diverted from Anmod ghat from passing through Polem or to take urgent measures to control it.
