PONDA
The two Goa Dairy farmers continued their indefinite hunger strike for the second consecutive day, with 10 more farmers joining them in the protest.
The protesting farmers are demanding a Rs 5 hike per litre on cow milk and the removal of Dr Navaso Sawant as managing director.
Anup Desai, chairman of Gosavardh Sahakari Dudh Sanstha from Priol and another farmer, Sanjiv Kuncolienkar, had began their hunger strike outside the Goa Dairy gate on Tuesday. The two protesting farmers had also brought two Jersey cows and tied them to the Goa Dairy compound, warning that more cows would be brought as part of their demonstration.
On Wednesday, Ponda Deputy Collector Kedar Naik tried to intervene and resolve the issue. At his request, Goa Dairy held talks with a delegation of farmers and assured to offer a Re 1 hike per litre on cow milk after discussing the matter with the board of directors.
However, farmers remained firm on their stand and continued their strike.
Speaking to media persons, Anup Desai said discussions with the Dr Sawant were not fruitful. “We can wait for a month to get an increase of Rs 5 for the cow milk, but we want the immediate removal of the MD,” he said.
