Ten two-wheelers belonging to Drishti lifeguards were gutted in fire in Candolim in the wee hours of Wednesday, Calangute police said.
The vehicles were parked outside the lifeguard centre on the beachside at Bamon-vaddo in Candolim.
According to police, eight two-wheelers were charred while two were partially burnt in the fire which occurred at around 3.30 am.
The lifeguards in a complaint claimed a loss of around Rs 10 lakh. They suspect that someone has deliberately set the bikes on fire. The incident came to light only when the lifeguards woke up in the
morning.
“The fuel pipes of the bikes were disconnected. Whoever has done it has taken petrol from the tanks and used it to set the bikes on fire,” one of the lifeguards told The Goan.
He said for the last several years they have been parking their bikes at the same spot.
Police have got CCTV footage from the scene of offence which shows two persons moving in the area at around 3.26 am but could not identify them due to the distance of the cameras.
“The CCTV cameras are located at a distance of around 70 metres away from the spot. We can only see the fire in the darkness,” a police officer investigating the case informed.
Calangute police visited the spot and conducted the panchanama.
An offence under section 435 IPC has been registered against unknown persons and the matter is being investigated.
