PANAJI: As campaigning for the polls to Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) picks up steam, only 11 of the 30 wards are expected to witness triangular fights between the candidates of top three panels. The ward Nos where the action would be centred around are: 2, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 20, 22, 23 and 24.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the banner of ‘Panaji First’ and St Cruz MLA Babush Monserrate have fielded candidates in all the 30 wards, while Congress under the banner of ‘United Panaji Front’ will battle it out with 20 candidates.
Though the three bigwigs are expected to clash in eight other wards too, but that would also involve independent candidates.
With the elections for Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) scheduled for March 6, nearly 31,500 voters from the capital city will decide the fate of 95 candidates contesting from all 30 wards of the CCP. Interestingly, 16 sitting councillors are in the fray once again.
The campaigning is in full swing with most of the candidates visiting every house in the ward to convince their voters.
Campaigning for BJP-backed candidates, Panaji MLA Sidharth Kuncalienkar and Taleigao BJP Mandal President Dattaprasad Naik are personally monitoring the campaign. While Kuncalienkar has been entrusted with the responsibility of 21 wards in Panaji, Naik is monitoring 9 wards in Taleigao.
Speaking about the campaign, Kuncalienkar said, “We have started campaigning in all 30 wards. While moving around in the wards we have observed that despite being in the opposition for eight years, the wards where we have sitting councillors have developed very well.”
He, however, said that wherever there are no councillors backed by the BJP, they will go to the people with the main focus being on civic issues and providing basic amenities to people.
Panaji City Corporation Development Front, backed by Taleigao bigwig Babush Monserratte began their campaign soon after they released their first list of 21 candidates. Monserrate has however completed door-to-door visits in 60 per cent of the wards. While their campaign’s focus lies on the progress of Panaji, Babush has promised to drop his manifesto at every Panjimite’s residence by March 4.
Meanwhile, United Panaji Front backed by the Congress which has fielded 19 candidates has also begun campaigning in all their wards. While Rudresh Chodankar, Isidore Fernandes and Pandurang Madkaikar are personally monitoring the campaign with door to door visits; their manifesto will follow in the days to come.
