PANAJI
The Goa government will launch the Green NH66 Mission on World Environment Day on June 5, in a bid to develop a green corridor along nearly 70 kms of National Highway 66 from Patradevi in North Goa to Galgibag in South Goa through large-scale plantation activities.
A government press statement mentions that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will launch the initiative at 11.30 am opposite the KTCL Bus Stand, Panaji, as the programme is aligned with the nationwide 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign.
It stated that the mission will be implemented in phases across 10 identified locations. "The project aims to improve the visual appeal of the highway network while contributing to environmental sustainability through carbon sequestration, soil stabilisation, climate action, and reduction of vehicle headlight glare," reads the statement.
The Forest Department will provide 1,000 saplings at each plantation site and 2,000 saplings at the launch venue in Panaji.
The programme will also witness the exchange of a memorandum of understanding between the Goa State Pollution Control Board, the Goa Waste Management Corporation, and the Cacora Government Industrial Training Institute for the implementation of the dual system of training for the waste management technician trade.
