Seventeen students sustained injuries when a school bus turned on its side at Hodar-Xelvona on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Curchorem Police, the bus (GA-01-Z-6906) had picked up 20 students from their school and was on its way to drop them home, when it turned on its side at Hodar.
When the driver, Uddesh Shantaram Naik, tried to stop the bus to drop some students, he realized that the brakes had failed and in a bid to save the students, he swerved the bus and brushed along a retaining wall. The vehicle then turned on its side, the police said.
Curchorem Police informed that 17 students sustained injuries in the mishap and were given first aid at the Curchorem-Cacora Community Health Centre. While 12 students were discharged from hospital, five students were later shifted to Hospicio in Margao for further medical treatment.
The remaining three students and the driver escaped unhurt.
A fire brigade, a police team and locals rushed to the accident spot and rescued the school students from the ill-fated bus.
