SANGUEM

Two councillors and their supporters blocked the road near the State Bank of India at Sanguem on Tuesday, to demand immediate hotmixing of the main road between Sanguem and Dando.

Opposition Councillors Meshu Da Costa and Sangameshwar Naik claimed that a stretch of 2 kms of the road had been dug by the water supply department in April to lay a new water pipeline to Sanguem town. They said while work to lay the new pipeline was on the verge of completion, Cyclone Tauktae struck the State and it was followed by pre-monsoon and monsoon rains, leaving the work to hotmix the damaged road incomplete.

The damaged road had caused a lot of problems for motorists and commuters in Sanguem.

Costa and Naik said a number of representations were made to highlight the issue and when there was no action to repair the damaged road, they decided to lead the agitation on Tuesday morning.

The protest witnessed some tense moments when a police team tried to move Meshu Da Costa to the side, sparking off a heated argument between the agitators and police.

The situation was later defused when officials from the water supply department assured to place concrete slabs over the damaged portion of the road within the next 15 days.

Following this assurance, the protestors withdrew their agitation but warned that they would return to agitate on the 16th day, if authorities fail to place the concrete slabs.
