A huge tamarind tree came crashing down near the Se Cathedral Church at Old Goa on Monday morning, blocking the road leading to the Divar ferry point while also damaging a kiosk and taking down power lines. According to information received, the Old Goa fire station received a call at around 8.30 am that the tree had fallen near the church, following which fire personnel rushed to the site and began operations to clear the tree.
The work is, however, unlikely to be completed on Tuesday and the firemen said they will have to continue the operation on Wednesday to get the tree cleared.
Duty officer Amit Rivonkar, driver operator Ramesh Virdikar, firefighters Vinayak Ugvekar, Paresh Gawas, Gautam Pednekar and Rajesh Malik are part of the team involved in clearing the tree.
Meanwhile, the incessant rains in the morning saw many roads go under water making it difficult for two-wheeler riders to navigate.
In Chimbel, the road near the Old Age Home was flooded due to the heavy rains and the potholes developed along the entire stretch of the road made it a difficult task for motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders. In Old Goa too, the road near the Ella Farm was submerged as also the road just ahead of the Karmali railway station.
However, as the rains gave a break around afternoon time, the water receded thereby giving a relief to the motorists. But the situation at the Jack Sequeira junction in Merces worsened due to the heavy rains as water was seen gushing in force onto the main road and the road leading to Temba Vaddy was completely submerged.
