BICHOLIM
The branch manager and accountant of Maharashtra Vikas Sewa Society at Sakhali were arrested in connection with a fraud of golden ornaments mortgaged at the branch.
Bicholim police arrested branch manager Anasaheb Rane and accountant Prakash Malik after the JMFC at Bicholim dismissed their anticipatory bail applications.
On October 17, police had arrested the peon, Sandesh Dicholkar, following complaints from about 200 depositors. Police had also booked offences against the branch manager and accountant for their alleged involvement in fraud along with the peon. However, police could not arrest the duo as the hearing on their anticipatory bail applications were underway before the JMFC at Bicholim.
After the Bicholim JMFC dismissed the anticipatory bail applications, the police arrested Malik while the branch manager surrendered. The peon is presently in judicial custody. Bicholim PI Sanjay Dalvi said the matter came to light during an audit which noticed irregularities to the tune of Rs 33 lakh.
Police have recovered golden ornaments of around 31 customers which were allegedly deposited in other banks. PSI Kishore Ramanand is investigating the case under the guidance of PI Dalvi.
