Goa police maintained a close vigil in the communally sensitive Rumdamol and Gogol Housing Boards on Saturday as a precautionary measure in view of the SC verdict on Ayodhya, but the day passed off peacefully without any untoward incident.
South district police chief, Arvind Gawas, claimed that not a single untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the district.
Two platoons of IRB, one each at the Rumdamol and Gogol, besides the regular personnel of the Maina Curtorim and Fatorda police stations were deployed in the two housing boards since early morning.
While the in-charges of the two police station, PI Gurudas Kadam and PI Kapil Nayak were on the field patrolling the areas, SP Gawas made repeated visits to the housing board areas throughout the day.
As part of the law-and-order arrangements, the police set up pickets along the sensitive areas in the two housing boards which have witnessed communal flare-up in the past. A visit to the Rumdamol Housing Board revealed that armed police were deployed right from the Maruti Temple to the Masjid road.
In the adjoining Gogol Housing Board, police pickets were set up at the Gogol-Rumdamol junction, which had in the past witnessed communal skirmishes between two groups of youth.
The police will maintain the police deployment for the next two days, even as a ‘julus’ procession is scheduled on Sunday. “The day passed off peacefully without any untoward incident. We are maintaining close vigil in all the sensitive areas of the two housing boards,” SP Gawas told The Goan. He said that the situation in other areas of the district was also peaceful with no untoward incident reported from any part.
