As per information provided by Paliencar, total fish catch in the state stood at 1,05,456 tonnes in 2016, which was 20% less than 1,31,825 tonnes two years ago.
Paliencar was responding to a question tabled during the ongoing monsoon session of the assembly.
Total fish catch is the summation of marine fish catch and inland fish catch. The drop in overall catch was primarily because marine fish catch fell by 21% to 1,01,053 tonnes in 2016 from 1,28,107 tonnes in 2014. On the other hand, inland fish catch grew by 18.4% from 3,718
tonnes in 2014 to 4,403 tonnes in 2016.
The maximum fall in catch was witnessed in the case of sardines (tarlo), which dropped by a massive 59% from 80,849 tonnes in 2014 to 33,326 tonnes in 2016. Much of the fall in fish-catch was on account of this huge decline in sardines' catch.
Prawns catch too fell by 32% from 9,283 tonnes in 2014 to 6,295 tonnes in 2016.
Other varieties of seafood which witnessed a drop in catch were cuttle fish (manki) (from 2,150 tonnes in 2014 to 2,021 tonnes in 2016), reef cod (gobro) (from 1,262 tons in 2014 to 1,146 tons in 2016), silver belly (kampi) (from 1,991 tonnes in 2014 to 1,672 tonnes in 2016), soles (lepo) (from 3,982 tonnes in 2014 to 3,237 tonnes in 2016),
Interestingly, catch of mackerels jumped a significant 89% from 10,308 tonnes in 2014 to 19,512 tonnes in 2016.
Other varieties of seafood to post growth in catch were cat fish (sangot) (from 598 tonnes in 2014 to 738 tonnes in 2016), seer fish (wiswan) (from 1,621 tonnes in 2014 to 2,802 tonnes in 2016), pomfrets (from 643 tonnes in 2014 to 902 tonnes in 2016), tuna (bokdo) (from 1,368 tonnes in 2014 to 7,857 tonnes in 2016) and sciaenoids (dodiaro) (from 1,802 tonnes in 2014 to 4,128 tonens in 2016).
