2017 - THE YEAR THAT WAS

Good and the bad -- here is what some of the personalities from varied fields of life had to say on the just concluded 2017 -- and what they expect in the New Year

In 2017 we have been as much of lemmings... you know lemmings, (a species of rodent unfairly infamous for) rushing towards their own death, they all run blindly and then they all die falling down the cliff. We have been lemmings in 2017 like we have been for the past. In 2018 hopefully, we'll see with our eyes before we all go tumbling down as humanity goes extinct, all the other amazing creatures. Let's hope we open our eyes.
- Abhijit Prabhudesai,
Social and environmental activist

A good thing about 2017 has been that all the activists have been coming together on various issues, be it coal and other issues. Let's hope this continues. But on other fronts, the women's front poverty and livelihood issues have continued to haunt and subsidies are not reaching the people. Development is pro-rich. Let's hope that in 2018 the government gives a serious thought to the issues of the people rather than focus on its own image building.

Women and environmental activist

The real estate sector had a very tough time in 2017 due to demonetisation, GST and implementation of RERA. It takes a while for everyone to acclimatise to reforms like these. We hope that things will move in better direction in 2018. We expect that the government makes RERA's website up and running for registration of projects as soon as possible so that we can start registration online in the new year
- Dr Desh Prabhudessai,
CREDAI (Goa) president
===============================================
The tourism industry has taken a small hit in 2017, as the number of tourist arrivals in December was lesser than last year's December. The government and the stakeholders need to sit across the table to deliberate on what needs to be done. We need to assess whether we are on the right track as far as marketing of Goa as a destination is concerned
- Savio Messias,
TTAG President
================================================
We are hopeful that 2018 will be a lot better than 2017. In Goa, a number of major infrastructural projects are happening like Mopa Airport and several bridges. Therefore, 2018 will be a good year for the state, in all probability
- Sandip Bhandare,
GCCI President
==============================
In 2017, a major issue at our industrial estate was resolved, as all factories are now getting raw water from pipeline. We are looking forward to getting 24x7 quality power supply in 2018. As of now, we suffer power outages. We also hope that all industries start getting the supply of treated water in 2018
- Damodar Kochkar
Verna IEA President

The year 2017 was quite good for information-technology (IT) sector in Goa. As GTA came together, we got a lot of clarity on the ecosystem, in terms of who our competitors are and who are the people we can work with. GTA worked with the state government by giving a lot of data and recommendations for ‘Start-up Policy' and ‘IT Policy'
- Mangirish Salelkar,
GTA President
========================================
A new year is a blank page, a fresh start. Goa Forward will push to abide and implement the issues as promised in the common minimum programme. We are proud that we could regain the status of coconut tree and further strengthened it by making it the State tree
- Trajano D'Mello,
GR Spokesperson
=========================================
In the new year, let all Goans be in the best of their health. The State Government has taken many positive steps in the health sector. Let as many Goans as possible register for the health scheme of the government so they get the maximum benefit out of it.
- Dr Shekhar Salkar,
Consultant Oncology
==============================================
2017 was a year of financial reforms like GST and various changes happening around the world. The revolutionary changes keeping everyone on toes as The implementation was little off the track. We look forward to 2018 with expectations and results of reforms to benefit one and all
- Manguirish Pai Raikar,
NC for MSME Chairman
===============================================
Better part of 2017 was spent away from my family, my profession and my passion for films before various courts at different levels of judiciary. In 2018, I hope the few good men in the system prevail upon the concerted effort amongst the deprived. May law and justice prevail in letter and in spirit! I wish peace and power upon the Just
- Dr Meenacshi Martins,
Counselling psychologist

As a theatre person, I would say that the year 2017 was a year of happenings in Goa. The theatre in Goa witnessed many positive changes. Year 2018 will see many Sanskrit plays as encouragement from the government level has speeded up. I am hoping to work on the revival of old Sanskrit plays in 2018 and present them to the modern audience.
- Afsar Hussain,
Theatre personality
================================================
2017 has been a developmental creative process, surprisingly widespread in state which incidentally has been little known for its strong base of the performing arts. It is my fondest wish that in 2018 there is an enhancement of these and more and that intellectually, we are able to harness our natural forces and at the same time nurture them, keeping creativity as a guideline
