230 Covid patients on NIV support in GMC: Dean

PANAJI

Painting a grim picture of the Covid situation at the Goa Medical College, Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said that 230 patients were presently under non-invasive ventilation (NIV) at the hospital.

“Two hundred and thirty Covid patients are on NIV at the GMC. Patients must come early and avoid last minute admissions”, Bandekar said.

As of today, 2,341 patients are hospitalised in private and government hospitals across Goa. 242 are admitted in Covid care centres and 29,292 are under home isolation, he said.

The total number of beds available for Covid patients in larger government and private hospitals is 2,669, he added.

With increasing number of Covid cases, many Covid patients have to still sleep on floor at GMC due to non-availability of beds, Dr Bandekar lamented.

“A total of 130 beds have been commissioned at Super Specialty block and more will be added in the next 24 hours. 25 of the 150 ICU beds at the block will also be commissioned by tomorrow”, he added.

On the third wave, Dr Bandekar said it is just a prediction, let us face this second wave properly. He urged Covid patients to get hospitalised early, as it gets difficult to medically manage health complications at later state.

He also revealed that the testing facility in the State will be further enhanced within the next few days by installing 3 more RT-PCR testing machines, one each at Asilo, GMC Hospital and South Goa District Hospital.

Dr Bandekar informed that government was in the process of procuring 100 more ventilators.
