On the occasion of World Environment Day, Responsible Earth Foundation organised seven beach cleanup drives across North and South Goa in collaboration with Royal Enfield, YIMBY, JCI Mapusa and others. It was a power-packed event with over 275 volunteers and more than 2500 kgs of waste collected. The seven locations which were covered included Colva, Benaulim and Varca in South Goa and Calangute, Baga, Anjuna and Vagator in North Goa.
The littering of pristine Goan beaches by tourists and locals alike is a serious concern. The most common things that were found during the cleanup drive were alcohol bottles and plastic cups among the other things which were piled in large amounts or recklessly thrown on the beach after use despite the dustbins available on many beaches.
“Goa is gifted with serene beaches expanding across vast coastlines. The intention behind these cleanup drives is to encourage people not to litter the beaches as well as to create awareness among the locals and tourists alike,” stated Gaurav Pokle, MD of YIMBY and founder of Responsible Earth Foundation, adding, “Through our foundation, we strive to create awareness by organising such activities and hope to see many others seek inspiration and join in our mission to restore our green planet.”
