Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar laid the foundation stone for the development of the Potkem ground in Poinguinim on Friday.
Incidentally, Tawadkar has laid the foundation stone for a second time, after the foundation stone laid by him as sports minister in December 2016 failed to launch the development of the Potkem ground.
On Friday, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, alongwith ZP (Poinguinim) Shobhana Velip and Poinguinim Sarpanch Savita Tawadkar unveiled foundation stone to mark the inauguration of the development of Potkem ground.
Potkem ground is reportedly being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore, which includes changing rooms, administrative block and other facilities.
“The work will commence immediately,” informed Tawadkar at a brief function.
It is expected that this project will provide a much-needed space for sports and give exposure to sporting talents in Canacona in general, and Poinguinim in particular.
Residents in Poinguinim have been demanding the development of Potkem Grounds for almost over three decades.
In December 2016, then sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar had laid the foundation stone to develop the Poinguinim stadium at a cost of Rs 24.12 crore.
At the time, the Poinguinim stadium which was to be constructed in an area 19,534.66 sq mtrs of land and a built-up area of 3,260 sq mtrs, was designed to providing accommodation/spectators gallery for 44 persons, VIPs, athletes and officials, an open space of 16,800 sq mtrs, parking for a minimum of 70 vehicles, indoor and outdoor facilities for wrestling, badminton, table tennis, judo, taekwando, cricket, football and other outdoor games.
