Porvorim Police arrested three persons and seized gambling material worth Rs 1.1 lakh after busting a cricket betting racket in Pilerne late on Thursday night.
According to SP North Akshat Kaushal, Porvorim Police received information from a reliable source that some people were accepting bets in a rented bungalow for the cricket match between India and Bangladesh during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy.
A police team led by Porvorim Police Inspector Rahul Parab raided the premises and arrested three persons, namely Maksud Mehabubhai Modan (28), Assifbhai Jiyauddeenbhai Ganja (25) and Rizvan Rafikbhai Bhash (20), all from Gujarat, while they were accepting bets for the cricket match.
During the raid, police seized various gambling materials such as four mobile phones, a laptop and a router, all worth Rs 1,10,000.
Porvorim Police have registered an FIR under Sections 3 and 4 of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act. Further investigation is in progress under the supervision of SDPO Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe and SP North Akshat Kaushal.
