3 more waste treatment plants on cards; work on Verna facility expected by July

After the Saligao waste treatment plant, the Goa government now intends to set up three more such plants in the State, two in South and one in North Goa and will form an action group to take the plan to its logical conclusion.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the media that the two garbage treatment plants in South Goa will come up at the Verna Industrial Estate and at Curchorem. The second garbage treatment plant in North Goa will come up at Bainguinim in Tiswadi taluka to tackle the waste generated in the capital city and neighbouring areas. While the plant at Verna will take care of the waste generated in Salcete and the industrial estate, the plant at Curchorem will address the problem in the Curchorem-Sanguem belt.
He said the Solid Waste Management Board has identified around 25-30 types of waste, including bio-medical waste, e-waste, building debris, etc which is generated in the State and that requires a solution. “We have to deal with all kinds of waste. A meeting of the Board will be convened next week to take stock of the situation. The Saligao plant is operating successfully. Even the German people are amazed at the functioning of the plant, since the unit installed at Saligao is based on an upgrade technology,” he said.
Parrikar said the Saligao plant can even tackle the coastal waste, which comes with sand. “Initially, we had the problem of replacing the parts because of abrasive. But, now we have fitted the machine with a filter to filter the sand,” he added.
When pointed out that the government’s plan to identify land for garbage disposal at the panchayat level has come a cropper, Parrikar said the government has now instead decided to set up transfer stations at every panchayat, wherein waste received will be compressed before it being lifted away.
“We expect the process to set up the plant at Verna to kickstart around July so that the entire process is taken to its logical conclusion around October-November,” he said, adding that the plants will take shape with all environmental clearances.

CANACONA:  Incidentally as protocol, the local MLA is sent an intimation of every meeting convened by the council, but Canacona MLAs have rarely attended these meetings, sources told The Goan. “Former MLA Ramesh Tawadkar had attended a council meeting only once during his entire term, while former Canacona MLA Vijay Poi Khot also used participate in discussions in the council. But both legislators have never attended the special council meeting convened to pass the…
