A second half strike by Naro Hari Shrestha helped Salgaocar FC overcome Dempo SC in their final league game of the GFA U-20 Taca Goa played at the T B Cunha Sports Complex Cansaulim. on Friday.
In a game of few chances, Salgaocar dominated possession through early exchanges but the threats were negated by a resolute Dempo defense. Barring an effort from Naro from the edge of the box that sailed narrowly over, there were no clear chances through the course of the half.
The game did come to life in the second half though as Naro broke the deadlock soon after resumption in the 52nd minute. Klins Mendes who received the ball around the centreline strode into space and his inch-perfect through ball saw Naro latch on to it to calmly slot past an advancing Dempo keeper.
Naro could have doubled the lead minutes later, but his chip sailed just over after Jason Barbosa did well to find him in the box.
Dempo then settled down and could have drawn level on a couple of occasions. First up, an effort from Ahsley Rodrigues saw Saurabh Patil at the heart of Salgaocar’s defense effect a goalline clearance in the 71st minute. Four minutes later, Jayson let fly from 30 yards out and was unlucky to see his shot thunder against the crossbar and go out of play.
The Salgaocar defense held firm thereafter to seal three valuable points and more importantly leaving Sporting with all to do in their final game against Vasco SC to prevent the Greens from retaining the crown.
