Three members of a migrant family from Karnataka are reported to have committed suicide in their rented room near MES College at Sancoale on Tuesday morning.
News of the triple suicide of a man, his wife and his brother in the same house shocked the locality. While some suspected that the three family members ended their lives following a police complaint registered against them in connection with a burglary at their landlord’s house last week, others suspected they took the drastic step allegedly due to police harassment.
According to sources, four people were staying in the house and three members -- Hulgappa Ambiger (30), his wife Devamma (23) and his brother Gangappa (25) -- ended their lives while the other person was not present in the room.
"The deceased were natives of Bijapur-Karnataka but were staying in the house since the last two years. The woman was working as a domestic maid in a house where some gold ornaments are reported to have been stolen and the deceased had allegedly been interrogated as part of police investigations in the matter," said the source.
"The fourth family member, the brother of Devamma, had apparently left the house early morning and returned only to find the three members dead inside the house. The Verna police was then notified about the incident,” said the source.
When contacted, local panch Nandini Desai confirmed the incident.
"I was attending the monthly panchayat meeting and I rushed to the site on hearing the news. We are unsure of the exact motive behind the deaths and police investigations are underway,” said Desai.
Verna police did not respond to calls when attempts were made to get their comments on the matter.
