MARGAO The Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in collaboration with the Supreme Court constituted Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee has trained 30 Advocates from South Goa to act as Mediators for amicable resolution of litigations.

The mediators would act as negotiators between the litigating parties and assist them to find a mutually acceptable settlement so that the litigation between them can peacefully end.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Bharat Deshpande, Judge High Court of Bombay at Goa, said that people are having faith in judiciary and as such more and more cases are being filed before the Courts. He said that mediation is an effective mode of amicably settling at least some of such court litigations. Sharing his experiences as a Judge, Justice Deshpande said “as a Judge we have to learn how to listen to people. A good mediator also has to listen to the parties as the litigant wants to be heard and give vent to his or her feelings”, while advising the mediators to be good listeners.

Speaking on the occasion, Adv. Prasad Naik, President of the South Goa Advocates Association, expressed his gratitude to Adv. Sangram Dessai, Member of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, for responding to his request and holding the first mediation training program for the Advocates, in the State of Goa. He said that mediation is the solution wherein both parties to the litigation are winners and that it is a win-win situation for all and not like court litigation where one wins and other party looses.

Adv. Maria D' Costa proposed the vote of thanks. The program was hosted by Adv. Pritam Morais. The 30 mediators were trained by expert trainers; Vijaykumar and Brindha Nandkumar. During the occassion, Adv. Tina Xavier, Adv. Vivekanand Sukhthankar and Adv. Eric Correia, shared their experience of being trained as mediators.
