A 32-year-old caretaker of a cowshed from Zuarinagar Birla was gored to death by a bull near Velsao lake on Saturday.
According to sources, Mehboob Walikar and his colleague were responsible to manage a cowshed in Birla.
On Friday, one of their bulls went missing after its tether came loose. The duo searched through the night but were unable to locate the animal.
The search continued the next morning, and they went near the Velsao Lake after suspecting that the bull might have wandered there, as they would usually take their cattle for grazing at the site.
They spotted the bull in the lake and Walikar entered the water in a bid to retrieve the bull and instructed his colleague to wait nearby.
However, as he approached the bull, it turned aggressive and charged at him, inflicting severe injuries on his thighs, chest, back, and shoulders leaving Walikar grievously injured.
His colleague immediately raised an alarm, prompting locals to rush to the scene. The injured Walikar was rushed to the Cansaulim Health Centre, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Following the incident, the locals managed to subdue and tie the bull. Verna police have registered a case of unnatural death and are conducting further investigations.
