Various celebrities like former India cricketers Venkatesh Prasad, Sunil Joshi and Srinivas Murthy will join a record 3,500 runners from Belagavi and Goa in the second edition of Belagavi Half Marathon on September 29.
Jointly organised by Lakeview Foundation and Rotary Club of Venugram, the marathon is aimed at creating health awareness among citizens of Belagavi and Goa region. T shirts and running BIBS expo were launched by Brig Govind Kalwad and Vrinda Kalwad at Lakeview Hospital, Goaves on Friday. Major General Alok Kakkar, commanding officer of the Junior Leaders Wing of the Indian Army, will flag off the marathon from the C PED ground, near club road, at 6 am. Briefing media persons, Vinay Balikai said the event has been organised to promote health awareness and importance of fitness among citizens. “Various celebrities like former India cricketers Venkatesh Prasad, Sunil Joshi and Srinivas Murthy will be also participating in the event,” he said.
Dr Kulgod of the Lakeview Foundation said the runners will take part in four categories, comprising 21 kms, 10 kms, 5 kms and a fun run. “Each of these categories have been given a different name to highlight social themes like fun run as Happy School Run, 5 km run as Heart Run, 10 km run for plastic-free India and 21 km as Sharquat Victory Run.” Large contingents of various armed forces comprising of the Army, Air Force and CRPF, ITBP, KSRP and Karnataka police will be participating in the event.
