The State has recently faced a surge in temperatures with January 28 registering a record high of 36.8 degrees, the highest ever recorded in the State for this time of the year.

Warm south-easterly winds have overpowered the generally cool coastal breeze to bring warm winds and equally scorching temperatures to the State.

Director of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa, M L Sahu said, “These temperatures are not normal for this time of the year. It is three degrees above the normal temperature. January 28 registered the highest temperature, 36.8 degrees Celsius. The earlier record was 36.7 degree Celsius.”

This type of temperature is abnormally high for this time of the year, he said adding, “this is due to the hot south-easterly winds coming from States like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka". Winds from South India have managed to overpower the cool coastal winds in the State to cause the temperature to rise. Though this is the main reason, there may be other factors affecting it too, he said.

The weather is expected to be dry across the State with a minimum temperature of 23 degree Celsius. Monday registered a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees and a minimum of 24.2 degrees. Humidity was 86 per cent, a departure of 7 per cent from the normal for this time of the year.

Sahu also said that over the next few days, the weather is expected to cool down with the North Westerly winds setting in.
