After the government granted special remission to certain categories of prisoners, four jail inmates lodged at the Colvale jail were released on Thursday on the occasion of the Republic Day as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.
The four prisoners were found to have good behaviour while undergoing their jail sentence for minor offences. They were sentenced for short-term and completed 66 per cent of their sentence term.
Those released were Hassan Miya Mulla, Vinod Vithoba Khutkar, Sidalingapa Bisanal and Banner Keishing.
According to jail officials, before their release, a counselling session was organised for the prisoners and their family members.
Inspector General of Prisons Bosco George (IPS) issued the Release Certificates to the prisoners and in his message, he asked the prisoners, “not to see prison again in their lifetime”.
The IGP was the Chief Guest while Additional IGP Vasudev Shetye was the guest of honour at the Republic Day function held at the Central Jail, Colvale which was attended by the jail staff and the inmates.
The Jail Superintendent hoisted the national flag on the occasion.
The IGP awarded medals and certificates to the jail staff for their excellent performance during the function. Besides, four inmates who were engaged in various activities were awarded for their excellent work in various categories.
On the occasion, the IGP gave promotion orders to two assistant jailors “ Anil Gaonkar and Vilas Parab “ who were promoted to the post of Jailor.
Three jail officials have been awarded for best ‘Drill Parade’ during the function.
The inmates who have cleared the examination through IGNOU at the jail centre were also provided with IGNOU graduation and post-graduation certificates.
Medals were also given to the staff and inmates who participated in the annual sports event.
